Carrying out photography services for free is a big no-no for photographers, it's vital to make a profit, as with any other business.
However there are exceptions, if its for a good cause.
I recently offered my services to a charitable organisation called The Bigger Picture, who support families in a deprived area of Newport. On this particular occasion, they were hoping to raise funds to help these families to have a special Christmas. That could be done by providing them with presents or food for Christmas day, that they otherwise don't have the money to buy.
We had an idea to set up an amazing grotto in the busy shopping centre of Friars Walk, Newport, offering fun activities for passers by and their children to take part in. I was on stand by to take professional photos of them with Santa.
I was so pleased to be able to provide such lovely moments in photo form at this time of year, especially as some of the children that attended were from the families that are supported by The Bigger Picture.
So, it doesn't help towards paying my bills, however it was for a worthy cause and it did help to promote myself slightly (two of the families booked me for family photoshoots, hooray!) They raised lots of money and it was great to work as part of a team with The Bigger Picture and with other suppliers that were donating their time and effort.
